Gulf Coast to Abbeville

A few weeks ago… I know, I’ve been a lazy blogger. Let me start again. A few weeks ago Larry and I met up with L and Ed from SCGT for a trip along the gulf coast and up to Abbeville to eat at Shucks. In route to meet Larry in Carlyss I hit a bump and the chrome ring around my headlight jumped off. It was too late by the time I turned around, smashed into several pieces by the oncoming traffic. You win some you lose some I guess. Larry and I arrived at Holly Beach just a little ahead of Ed and L. After stopping for just long enough to shake hands we were off to Cameron where the obligatory photos were taken on the ferry.ferry
From Cameron along Hwy 82 to Pine Island is a long stretch with no gas stations, so take that into account if you go that way.

treenutsLarry had told us all about a giant live oak tree that we really should see, and he was right, check out this monster. Which brings to mind “How do you catch a squirrel? Get under a tree and act like a nut.” We joked around for a while and speculated on how old the tree might be then hit the road for Abbeville.

Abbeville greeted us with people lined up on both sides of the street staring and waving. Unbeknownst to us the Cattle Festival Parade was about to start, I think we were an unofficial entry. We didn’t stay for the procession because we were all ready to eat.

If you find yourself in Abbeville, Shucks is the place to eat. I don’t eat oysters a lot, but I had a half oyster half shrimp po-boy that was very good. Lawrence had broiled oysters that looked wonderful. I guess we must be a conspicuous group because one of the owners came out to see us. Turns out he rides a bike and took interest in our scoots and the route we had taken to get there.

The return trip was by Hwy 14 and uneventful other than a little rain and a flying insect that stung me through my riding jacket. Our stomachs must have been too full for us to get into mischief.
